Abstract

An optimised flushing routine for drinking water distribution system maintenance was developed for the distribution system of a Lower Saxon water board using a dynamic particle transport model. The development of the optimised flushing routine was based on the determination of the particulate load, the mathematical description of particle transport and deposition as well as on model based knowledge regarding the resuspension of previously deposited particles. The application of the optimised flushing routine means targeted and efficient cleaning of pipe sections susceptible to the formation of deposits in actually required intervals. This approach can contribute to reduce deposit formation and allows a more efficient maintenance of distribution systems. Consequently, risks for drinking water quality can be reduced.
