Abstract

Computer simulation can be used in addition to conventional static design methods to get important further information about the operation of plants for biological waste water treatment. The mathematical models consist of the mass balances in the form of nonlinear ordinary differential equations as well as additional equations for the oxygen transfer and the kinetics of biochemical reactions. The solution is carried out numerically using a fourth order RungeKutta method. The possibilities of computer simulation are shown by the example of a small sewage treatment plant in the case of temporary overload and impact loads by bathtub outflow as well as of a reactor cascade with upstream denitrifcation reactor and different values of the reflux flow.
