Water supply in Uyoma in Rarieda District, Kenya

Abstract

In 2011 the Rotary Club Neunkirchen / Saar (Germany) has initiated a humanitarian aid project in the southwest of Kenya. The project focusses on medical care, preventive health care and the organization of self-sufficiency of families in the community of Uyoma in Rarieda District, Lake Victoria. Uyoma and Rarieda District are among the poorest regions of Kenya. The reliable and adequate supply of the population with hygienically safe and affordable drinking water is an essential key factor for a sustainable development of the region. In the course of the project inventory and a condition assessment of main elements of the water supply system in Uyoma was done in the framework of a master-thesis [1]. The results of the thesis show the elementary deficits of the system, which directly affects the living conditions of the native population and demand an immediate improvement of the present situation.
