The design of wastewater treatment plants involves an interdisciplinary effort. Especially at the beginning of the project, it is possible to determine the project costs. At the same time, however, there are various uncertainties which can only be eliminated in the process of detailed planning during the progress of the project. Using the example of a sewage sludge reduction technology, this article demonstrates how dynamic wastewater treatment plant simulation can support the planning process from the initial design stage onwards. The benefit lies in the detailed and transparent representation of the technical interactions in wastewater and sludge treatment. The advantages of this approach are illustrated using a specific example.
