Abstract

In the transient thermodynamic processes in pressure vessels for pressure surge protection, the convective heat transfer has the greatest influence and is largely determined by the temperature difference between the compressed air cushion and the inner wall of the vessel. Up to now, the tank wall temperature has been approximated as constant or as a function of the compressed air temperature for calculations, but there was no approach for the correct calculation of the wall temperature based on the physical relationships. This article closes this gap. It is shown how the transient temperature distribution in the multi-layer tank wall can be accurately modeled using the central difference method. Validation using measured values shows good agreement.  The method is suitable as a subroutine for pressure surge programs.
