Rainwater treatment plants often exhibit insufficient contaminant retention when relying solely on sedimentation, particularly at higher surface loadings. To address this issue, in situ-microflotation was developed for retrofitting rainwater treatment plants.
A stormwater sedimentation tank was equipped with in situ-microflotation and monitored for one year. In addition, hydrological and pollutant load modelling was performed for the associated catchment area, and the retention efficiency of impounded sedimentation tank was modelled in STORM.Pro using the monitoring data.
With a modeled average efficiency of about 66 % for TSS63, the stormwater sedimentation tank + in situ-microflotation is significantly more effective than the stormwater sedimentation tank using pure sedimentation, which has an efficiency of about 41 %. The average efficiency of the stormwater sedimentation tank and in situ-microflotation was calculated to be 76 % for tyre wear. The monitoring results confirm the high level of pollutant load retention. The in situ-microflotation thus performs largely independently of surface loading and represents a practical retrofit solution for existing facilities as well as for new constructions in the field of stormwater treatment. Additionally, it contributes to improving the ecological condition of water bodies.
