Abstract

By introducing the internet into production systems, Industry 4.0 creates a field of tension between the possible and the practical. Driven by the IT domain, which is generally years ahead of the manufacturing sector in terms of innovative power, developments are held back by industry, which has to protect its investments while maintaining availability and data security. This contribution describes the drivers of Industry 4.0, illustrates the industrial requirements, and presents an integration topology in accordance with the demands for security and stability.
