Abstract

Choosing platforms and user acceptability

Innovative automation solutions, such as advanced process control, operator training simulators, and control performance monitoring promise increased plant throughput, improved operability and energy efficiency, reduced plant start-up times, and asset management support. In recent years, several suppliers of distributed control systems (DCS) have developed integrated advanced solutions. These now represent alternatives to the established separate solutions which can be linked to the DCS used in the plant. The advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are described to provide orientation for producers and users. automation solutions, such as advanced process control, operator training simulators and control performance monitoring, promise increased plant throughput, improvements of operability and energy efficiency, reduction of plant start-up time as well as asset management support. During the last years, several suppliers of distributed control systems (DCS) have developed this kind of advanced solutions. At the same time, specialized suppliers offer systems with sophisticated functionalities, independently from the DCS used in the plant. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages, which are described in this article to provide orientation for suppliers and user industry.
