WIA-PA: A New Standard for Wireless Communication

Abstract

The paper provides background and challenges of industrial wireless technology and summarizes the present state of standardization. It introduces characteristics of WIA-PA, a specification for industrial wireless networks for process automation, and its network composition, network topology and protocol stack architecture. WIA-PA is currently subject of international standardization. Furthermore, a comparison between WIA-PA and the other main industrial wireless network specifications, WirelessHART and ISA100.11a, is provided. Finally, four applications are presented.
