Holistic Workspace - Designing the Future Control Room

Abstract

This article presents an inter-domain context-of-use analysis that addresses the challenge posed by the constantly increasing complexity of the human-computer interface in the work environment of control room operators: what is when, how, and why used or should be usable, respectively? The data gathered are taken as a basis to develop new ways of optimizing the operators' work environment. These concepts consider likewise the design levels of interaction, social communication, workflow support, and physical surroundings.
