Abstract

Increasingly complex machine tools confront operators with a heavy information load. At the same time, the navigation structures are function-oriented and input devices fail to offer appropriate support for human-machine-interaction, extending initial training and making daily operations less efficient. Modern HCI approaches used in information and mobile technology, though not designed with production engineering in mind, can enhance machine usability and offer more intuitive machine tool handling. But due to higher security requirements and system complexity, most HCI concepts require extensive adaptation. This article presents an approach for a task-oriented HMI structure aimed at reducing the overall system complexity and related cognitive load for human operators. Furthermore, the machine supports individual workflows and increases human efficiency by integrating adapted user input devices.
