Abstract

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) will play an increasingly important role in the course of activities relating to the recently started German Industry 4.0 initiative. In autumn 2012 the IEC TR 62794 document [1] was released by the IEC TC65 Working Group 16 which shows how to describe “assets” using the property oriented methodology (Property Principle) in accordance with IEC 61360 [2]. A virtual plant stored in a data repository and containing the applied products as lists of their properties represents a real plant. The creation of a CPS as one asset type by specifying its semantically unique properties is shown. A side effect of this methodology is a significant reduction in the number of semantic conversions in a system. A brief overview of the international standardization efforts is included.
