Abstract

IEC EN 61508 describes the control of systematic and unexpected hazardous events with safety-relevant technological systems. It establishes necessary conditions for the design, development, and operation of safety-related systems. Although the standard includes annexes which address technical and practical aspects, it does not constitute a set of instructions for the development of safety-relevant systems. Developers therefore have scope to design innovative and competitive products. Here the development and implementation of safe functions are described for an actuator. Possible architectural characteristics are considered.
