Abstract

Chemical companies must find new paths to success in a changing environment. In particular, this will involve exploiting the potential of digital technologies. However, the full integration and intelligent interconnection of systems and processes is only making slow progress. This contribution aims to encourage the more comprehensive use of digitization in the process industry based on smart sensors, actuators, and communications, and informs about current technical possibilities such as the “one-network paradigm”, ad-hoc connections, edge computing, FPGAs, virtual machines and blockchain. These offer a new scope for smart sensors, actuators, and communications.
