Abstract

The document OPC UA Safety – jointly developed by Profibus & Profinet International and the OPC Foundation – specifies functional safety for communications between industrial controllers via a standardized, vendor-independent interface. It supports both unicast and multicast, as well as arbitrarily structured user data with a length of up to 1500 bytes. The safety measures are derived from PROFIsafe and comply with all relevant safety standards. OPC UA Safety makes it possible to build modular machines in which the safety functions adapt to the actual configuration of such a machine. Even safety functions requiring a change of communication partners during runtime, for instance in the context of autonomous mobile robots, can be realized.
