Abstract

A major source of error in grinding processes are thermal surfacenear zone damages (so-called grinding burn) at the contact point between the workpiece and grinding wheel. Grinding burn leads to unwanted stresses and changes of the material hardness in the workpiece’s surface. Since this effect can not yet be detected in-process, high safety factors for the material removal rate and the dressing intervals of the grinding wheel must be used. The present work introduces an approach for a controlled grinding process with the thermal zone damage as the main control variable. The in-process detection of the edge zone’s damage of the workpiece is carried out by the micromagnetic measuring method Barkhausen noise.The result is a novel type of process control concept for grinding.
