Abstract

EN 61508 requires the calculation of a so-called PFH for safety functions that are requested on average more frequently than once a year. The aim of this paper is to derive a generally valid formula that always produces the correct PFH result, regardless of any tests and renewals of the safety function. The term “correct” is to be understood here as meaning that the result represents a measure
of the average failure frequency of the safety function per hour. This article also demonstrates the application of the new formula using two examples and verifies its correctness by means of Monte Carlo simulations.
