Abstract

The escalating frequency and sophistication of cyber threats increased the need for their comprehensive understanding. This paper explores the intersection of geopolitical dynamics, cyber threat intelligence analysis, and advanced detection technologies, with a focus on the energy domain. We leverage generative artificial intelligence to extract and structure information from raw cyber threat descriptions, enabling enhanced analysis, which yields new insights, providing actionable information to researchers, policy makers, and cybersecurity professionals.

Author Biographies

Gustavo Sanchez , Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

Gustavo Sánchez is a researcher currently pursuing a PhD at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany, supervised by Prof. Veit Hagenmeyer. Before joining KIT, he was a research intern at the IMDEA Software Institute in Spain. Gustavo received a Bachelor’s in Software Engineering from Sheffield Hallam University (UK), and in 2021 completed a Master’s in Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence at The University of Sheffield (UK). His research interest lies in the area of offensive security, with a focus on AI methods and within the context of critical infrastructure.

Ghada Elbez, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

Dr.-Ing. Ghada Elbez received the M.Sc.  degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the Ecole Polytechnique de Lille, France, in 2016, and the Ph.D. degree from the Informatics Faculty, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, in 2022. She is the Head of the Secure Energy Systems Research Group, KIT, where she is also a Coordinator of the KASTEL Security Lab Energy, Institute for Automation and Applied Informatics. Her research interests include cybersecurity of Energy systems, defense mechanisms for early detection of attacks, and security standards. She serves as a reviewer and the chair in various IEEE and ACM conferences. She actively contributes to some German standardization groups within VDI/VDE on the topics of cyber-security in energy systems.

Veit Hagenmeyer, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Veit Hagenmeyer is currently a Professor of Energy Informatics with the Faculty of Informatics, and the Director of the Institute for Automation and Applied Informatics, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany. His research interests include modeling, optimization,
and control of sector integrated energy systems, machine-learning-based forecasting of uncertain
demand and production in energy systems mainly driven by renewables, and integrated cyber-security
of such systems.
