Virtual control systems (vSPS) represent a further step towards the digitalisation of production and the associated OT/IT integration. The control functionality (IEC 61131, PLCopen libraries) is thereby separated from the machine or plant, both physically and organisationally. This current development is based on a range of technologies, such as industrial communication, which have been successfully established in recent years. This article describes the development to date, the state of the art and the challenges facing the future development of virtual controllers.
