Abstract

Model-predictive control has received growing attention in recent years due to increasing computing power and more accurate mathematical machine models. However, in connection with machine tools, P and PI controllers are still used in most cases. This paper presents a Model-Predictive Controller for the position control loop of feed drives. A main consideration is sufficient robustness with respect to model errors, whereby the dynamics of the positioning process should also be increased. The development of the controller takes place concerning robustness by means of structured singular value. Experimental validation shows that the model predictive controller fulfils the requirements both for robustness and for increased dynamics of the feed axis.
