Knowledge-based Selection of Solution Principles

Abstract

The selection of suitable principle solutions for measuring and actuating tasks requires detailed expert-knowledge which is not available for every planning engineer in the process of plant design. This situation can be made worse if technological developments introduce new principle solutions or change the scope of existing solutions. Paper-based, vendor-neutral knowledge-sources such as books or guidelines rapidly become outdated. This paper introduces a knowledge-based system which can easily be adapted to the current state of technology by expert groups. The concept has been used successfully in a case study for the selection of flow measuring principles and drive principles.
