Abstract

DCS embedded Model Predictive Control offers the same degree of availability, usability, ease of maintenance, and cost-efficiency as conventional PID controllers, while offering a potential for better control performance. This opens up potential new application fields where separate full-scale MPC software packages are not profitable. This article summarizes general aspects related to the selection of attractive applications for embedded MPC. By integrating MPC functionality in re-usable software modules at the layer of equipment modules and at the layer of process units (“unit templates”) APC expertise can easily be used in real world applications and the engineering input required for MPC projects can be reduced.
