From data silos to digital twins

Abstract

Interoperability is the key to digitally upgrading brownfield plants and gradually automating engineering support. NAMUR Open Architecture (NOA), Module Type Package (MTP), and Asset Administration Shell (AAS) together provide
the common framework. They establish a standardised data channel, describe modules in a vendor-neutral way, and make machinereadable digital twins available. This article shows how, on this basis, concrete use cases emerge along the lifecycle, from “automated as built” and safety verifications through to the Digital Product Passport, and how operators
can use them to develop a “copilot” for operations, service, and compliance.
