Feedforward control for radial compressors – An approach to enhancing safety and efficiency

The control of radial compressors is a challenging problem in view of the nonlinearity of the plant, frequent operating point changes, as well as several state and control constraints. The article presents a model-based control concept in which the commonly used conventional compressor control structure is extended by a nonlinear feedforward controller. This makes it possible to improve the control performance and disturbance suppression in comparison to the conventional compressor control structure. The efficiency of the concept is demonstrated by a test on an experimental plant.
