Abstract

The flexibilization of modular plants poses new challenges for risk reduction procedures with Safety Instrumented Systems. In order to reduce losses in flexibility, the entire safety lifecycle and the relevant activities must be adapted for the requirements of modular automation. In this paper, the existing safety life cycle models from IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 are examined with regard to their suitability for application in modular plants. For this purpose, the requirements of process equipment assemblies and modular plants are listed and the individual phases of the standards are compared and evaluated according to their suitability. For the evaluation, the safety lifecycles were tested against the normative requirements during several focus group workshops. The result is a safety life cycle for PEA and plant engineering in which the requirements were implemented.
