Abstract

The process industry is undergoing a profound transformation as artificial intelligence (AI) extends classical automation with data-driven and adaptive decision-making.
The introduction of AI as a general-purpose technology follows the logic of a J-curve: initial investments are high, but long-term productivity gains are substantial. Using a case study, we demonstrate that AI algorithms can deliver robust predictions even in data-scarce scenarios.  Trustworthy AI is a central prerequisite to combine efficiency, safety, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
