Abstract

For some years now, intensive work has been carried out to develop a new automation architecture for the process industry. The initiative originated in the USA, and in the author‘s view the contents have not yet been sufficiently discussed in Germany. As a contribution to the ongoing debate, this article considers the motivation of the work and assesses the results achieved thus far. The aim is to intensify the discussion about a new automation architecture and the associated changes to business models in German-speaking countries.
