Abstract

A PhD confronts doctoral students with major organisational and communicative challenges, and their supervisors want to support them in a goal-oriented manner. Particularly in the engineering environment, a doctorate imposes great demands on young people in terms of their ability to communicate complex matters in a comprehensible and convincing manner. In this article,
the Business Model Canvas is examined in order to efficiently support the various phases of a PhD precisely in this critical area. For this purpose, the Business Model Canvas, a methodology that has proven itself in industrial practice, is transferred to the problem world of the PhD. The aim is to significantly improve internal and external communication and knowledge transfer. From this, the authors derive helpful recommendations for PhD students and their supervisors and explain how these facilitate the PhD period.
