Abstract

Additional software functions are increasingly being run on edge devices, creating a dynamic software lifecycle alongside
traditional automation hardware. This first part of the article examines, using a production-ready implementation at Boehringer Ingelheim, the extent to which the open standard Margo covers lifecycle phases for up to 10,000 industrial devices and where further development is required. The security implications will be explored in greater depth in Part 2.
