Abstract

Up until today, there is still no undisputedly accepted, manufacturer-independent and consistent flow of  information for the engineering of automation equipment in process industries. The attempt to synchronise the existing “data islands” has been the focus of numerous research, committee and standardisation activities for decades. However, the development of an all-encompassing world model was and still is too time-consuming, too complex, too expensive, too slow and too error-prone. This article presents a vision of the future based on the administration shell, which structures the engineering process into standardised steps. Part 2  presents an evolutionary concept for the migration of  today’s engineering into the future.
