Abstract

This paper first considers information models and distinguishes them from data models. Subsequently, we explain how information models can be used in a process plant. Six use cases are considered where information models can support and automate the transfer of information between different systems along the life cycle of a plant. For this purpose, the connection to the digital twin of the plant and to the asset administration shell as an implementation form of the digital twin is also established. In this context, various types of asset administration shells are presented. Finally, three application examples are discussed: the information transfer between engineering and operation, functional safety, and explosion protection.
