Abstract

Modular electrolysis plants scale their production capacity by combining independently operable electrolyzer modules and can thus respond flexibly to volatile electricity prices. Coordinating multiple electrolyzers under volatile operating conditions and unplanned outages poses a challenge. This paper reports on laboratory experiments at a modular
electrolysis plant with three electrolyzers (2.4kW each), operated by a rolling optimization based on a multi-agent system. Three test cases are evaluated: electricity-price-based
operation under a static demand target, operation under electrolyzer outages, and a combined scenario with demand changes and electrolyzer failure.
