Practical integration of LLM into process automation

Abstract

AI for the process industries is widely discussed. This article examines the practical integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) into process automation by linking the Module Type Package (MTP) with the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Initial experiments demonstrate that LLMs are unsuitable for direct
process control and real-time regulation. The results show that AI does not represent a revolution for the tasks discussed for process industries, but rather an evolutionary complement to existing automation systems to support human experts in complex decision-making.
